Robertsville Middle School Band

The RMS Music Department has made an effort to make grading more consistent across the three disciplines of band, chorus, and strings. Grading categories will include tests, quizzes, daily participation, and concerts. Additionally a folder grade will be given for the second, third, and fourth terms.

Grades will be based on a total points system which will vary each nine weeks according to the number of tests, quizzes, and days in class. Each student needs to earn at least 93% of these points to receive an ‘A’, at least 85% to receive a ‘B’, etc. Extra credit will be awarded for parent verified practice at home.

Tests: 100 points each. Most are playing tests but some may be written. All tests are given with at least a two day notice.
Quizzes: 50 points each. Quizzes can be given on any day, with or without prior notice. All quizzes are a short sample of instrument playing.
Daily participation: 5 points per day. Students are expected to have a working instrument, music, pencil, and a positive attitude in every band class. Missing any of these may result in fewer points awarded.
Concerts/ Performances/Special Rehearsals: Up to 300 points per grading term. Missing a mandatory event without permission requires a written note, signed by a parent at least 2 weeks in advance. If this note is not received, the result is a maximum of a two letter grade drop per event. Students who are excused from an event will still be expected to make up the time.
Folder: 30 points. Students who keep all of their concert music in their assigned folder until after a performance will be awarded the full amount.
Practice Records: Every hour of practice time will add one half of one point to the final average. All practice records must be signed by a parent and must be turned in immediately upon completion.

Every child has the potential to make a satisfactory grade under this system. Failure would reflect a poor attitude and a complete lack of effort.
